Chapter Two

I slept like the dead that night. The next morning my mom had me up early to go back to the doctor’s office. I had expected her to be somewhat awkward that morning but mom was happier than normal as she helped me down the stairs and into the car. We got to the doctor’s office and waited a while in the lobby. I couldn’t keep my eyes off my mom and was curious to see the jealous looks shot her way by the others in the office.

Finally, a nurse came out and called my name, she led my stepmom and I back to the room and had us wait, asking me to remove my shirt until the doctor arrived. When he arrived, he was all business as he checked my cuts and scrapes, then my arms to see how the bones were setting and how my movement was.

“You won’t have the use of your hands for several weeks lad, but you should be able to move around a bit more now. Still I’d like to take a look at it, make sure it’s healing correctly.” He turned to his chart and gave a look at the notes there and then glanced at my mom saying, “I would say no more than 50 minutes of activity a day for the next few days and then he should be good for a few hours a day. Make sure he keeps taking the meds for sleep, I don’t want to roll around while restless.”

“I understand doctor,” she said with a smile at me, “he will be well taken care of.”

“Good,” the doctor said standing and walking to the door, “I will have the nurse come in and get you to x-ray and your prescriptions.” Turning to look at me he gave a bracing smile, a brief flash of teeth quickly gone, “You’ll be back to using those arms before you know it Jack! Just make sure you take it easy and heal up now, that way you won’t do any permanent damage to your grip.” Then he was gone and mom helped me slip my shirt back on.

We waited in silence my mom reading through messages on her phone, while I took in the pictures on the wall, when the nurse came in, we both smiled to see aunt Lauren in her nurses uniform. She looked the perfect part with her blond hair wrapped up in a bun, and her prodigious chest strapped down beneath her top.

“I got to check out your x-rays slugger and it’s great news!” she said as she came in with a big folder. Going to the x-ray viewer, she pulled out two print and put them up on the wall. “See here?” She asked pointing to a spot that looked exactly like everything else to me in the area, greyish bone. “This is a clean break, and it is setting perfectly. The doctor says you should be back to new in a few months after just a little therapy to build back the muscles.
